Empirical Analysis using Household and Micro-level Datasets

Formal empirical analysis of the social impact of crises, policy adjustments and other economic events is typically underpinned by an ex- post analysis using nationally representative household survey data.

Social Budget Tracking and Analysis

Social budget tracking and analysis tools monitor the extent of priority and protection given to public budget items and can influence government policies in favour of allocations to children and families.

A Child Rights Lens for Poverty and Social Impact Analyses (PSIAs)

Poverty and Social Impact Analyses, PSIAs, are aimed at facilitating an ex-ante understanding of the potential distributional impacts of a given policy reform. Child rights centered PSIAs, add a child focus to these impact assessments, as tools specifically designed to promote more child sensitive real-time policy making.

A UNICEF WCARO – UNICEF IRC Research on the Impact of the Increase in Food Prices on Child Poverty and the Policy Response in Mali

This research project was promoted jointly by the UNICEF Regional Office for Western and Central Africa (WCARO) and UNICEF IRC, with the support of the UNICEF country office in Mali. It was initiated in Fall 2008 with the aim to understand the potential impact of the 2007-08 food crisis on different aspects of child well-being in Mali. The micro-simulation methodology was developed and applied by an international research team composed of researchers at the Laval University (Quebec), the UNICEF IRC and the Groupe de Recherche en Economie Appliquée et Théorique (GREAT, Mali). The final study presents simulations of the impacts of this crisis and a number of policy responses with respect to the welfare of children. The impacts are analysed in terms of monetary (food) poverty, nutrition, education, child labor and access to health services of children. It was released (in English and French) as part of the Innocenti Working Paper series and is available on the UNICEF IRC website. A version of the paper has been also published as chapter 8 in Cockburn, J. and Kabubo-Mariara, J. (eds.) Child Welfare in Developing Countries, Springer, 2010.
