East Asia and the Pacific Region: Real-time Monitoring Updates on the Impact of the Global Economic Crisis on Children

The significant impact of the 2008-09 global economic crisis on the economies and societies of East Asia and the Pacific (EAP) has been undeniable. While there are variations in the impact across countries, the crisis was an unpleasant reminder of the flip-side of the export-led growth models, which most countries had adopted in the region. As it came on the heels of the food and fuel price crises, the economic shock magnified the impact on poverty and social development. Against this backdrop, it is important that the social impact of the multiple crises on the social sectors is monitored and assessed. The paucity of data on social indicators from the 1997 crisis, confirmed during the January 2009 conference that UNICEF convened in Singapore, was a timely reminder about the importance of tracking any effects in vulnerable populations as the current crisis has evolved. To respond to this need, since 2009 a series of real-time monitoring schemes have been put in place in EAP, for which UNICEF has played a key role. The key outcomes of these initiatives are featured in the 'Documents' section below.
